About Colocation
Colocation generally refers to the moving or placing of items together,
implying a proper order. However, from a hosting technology standpoint,
this term refers to the provisioning of space for a customer's server
equipment hardware on a web hosting service provider's premises.
One example of this would be a Web site owner. He or she would store
computer servers where the files of the web site are all stored
(ie. HTML files) on the datacenter premises of the web hosting service
provider. Or the web host could place its network routers on the
premises of the company offering switching services with other ISPs.
The alternative to colocation is to have the equipment and the demarcation
point located at the customer's premises.
